London Metropolitan Students’ Union (LMSU) exists to empower students to make the most of their time at London Met and transform their lives for the better. Volunteers are a crucial part of making that happen, and we are committed to providing high quality, well-supported volunteering opportunities that are accessible to all sections of our diverse student body.
Volunteering is a great way to get involved in something you’re already passionate about or to try something new. All of our volunteers make a difference, helping to create change and improving the experience of students at London Met and beyond whilst also gaining valuable experience and developing skills that will help to improve your career prospects and get ready for what comes next. You also get to meet lots of lovely people and join a community of committed fellow student volunteers.

Here at LMSU there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved in volunteering. All of our volunteer roles are safe and provide training, ongoing support and additional development opportunities. Volunteers are provided with regular social opportunities, receive a certificate at the conclusion of their roles and have their contribution formally recognised on their degree transcript. We also encourage volunteers to help shape their roles and provide opportunities to inform improvements.

Our Student Groups offer the chance to get involved with student-led activities on and off campus, and cover a variety of areas; from interest and community Societies, to competitive Sports clubs, and hands-on experience through Verve Media. Student Group leaders also have the opportunity to be elected to sit on the Activities Committee, which ensures Student Activities is shaped by students.
Being a Student Group Leader allows you to take a lead role in running and shaping an activity you are passionate about as well as providing a huge opportunity to improve your confidence and gain a unique experience and invaluable skills that will really make your CV stand out.

Student Reps are students elected by their peers to represent the voice of students on their course. They provide feedback to staff, raise issues on behalf of the students they represent, discuss solutions and give students a voice in the decision-making process at London Met.
Being a Student Rep provides a great opportunity to be a grass- roots representative within a democratic member-led organisation. It's a chance to help others and be an agent for positive change and get involved in the Students' Union and, through that, the London and UK-wide student movement. The role will improve your knowledge of the University, which in turn will help you get more out of your time at London Met and your academic achievements. Being a Student Rep also provides a huge opportunity to improve your confidence and gain a unique experience and invaluable skills that will really make your CV stand out.

Student Council is the main representative body of the Students’ Union and is made up of students who are elected by their peers to represent different groups of students from across the University. Student Council discusses and debates issues which are of interest or concern to students. It provides recommendations to the Trustees of the Students’ Union, offers direction and holds the Students' Union Executive (Full and Part-time Officers) to account. Student Council members also have the opportunity to be elected as Chair or Deputy Chair of Student Council.
Being a Student Council member provides an opportunity to help steer the direction of the Students’ Union, ensure that your elected representatives are acting in the best interests of students and within the boundaries of LMSU’s democratic processes and to influence positive change to the student experience of your peers. Being a Student Council member also provides a huge opportunity to improve your confidence and gain a unique experience and invaluable skills that will really make your CV stand out.

Liberation Officers are elected by their peers to represent students who self-identify as belonging to a specific demographic: Women students, BAME students, LGTBQ+ students and Disabled students. Liberation Officers form part of the Executive Committee, the formal group made up of all the full-time and part-time officers that decides what the Students’ Union’s political positions will be. They are also members of Student Council.
As a Liberation Officer you have the chance to ensure that the Students’ Union and the University takes the views and needs of the students you represent into account. Being a Liberation Officer also provides a huge opportunity to improve your confidence and gain a unique experience and invaluable skills that will really make your CV stand out.

Student Trustees are elected by their peers to be members of the Students’ Union’s Trustee Board. Trustees are responsible for ensuring the Students’ Union has a clear vision, mission, values and strategic direction and that these are applied in our everyday work. They are responsible for the performance and behaviour of the Union, as well as developing policies and procedures. It makes key decisions in regards to the union's finances and other important aspects. It also ensures compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
Being a Student Trustee is a fantastic opportunity to broaden your understanding of charity governance, gain experience in strategic, financial and legal oversight and ensure that the voice of students is represented in the highest decision-making body of the Students’ Union. Being a Student Trustee also provides a huge opportunity to improve your confidence and gain a unique experience and invaluable skills that will really make your CV stand out.

Sustainability Reps are elected by their peers to represent the sustainable approaches that the University is working on. Sustainability Reps raise awareness for sustainability initiatives at London Met by coordinating student-led campaigns and promoting best practice such as recycling, energy saving methods and lowering carbon footprint. They also work in partnership with the University and avocate for improvements to policies and practices relative to environmental and other sustainability areas, acting on behalf of the student body and representing students’ best interests.
Being a Sustainability Rep provides a great opportunity for students to get involved in sustainability projects within London Met and offers a chance to raise awareness and help other students understand the importance of becoming more sustainable. Sustainability Reps also act as a crucial partner between the University, the Students Union and students in promoting exciting new sustainability projects.

Some of our volunteering opportunities also have their own handbooks relevant to them, including handbooks specifically for Student Group Leaders, Student Reps and Student Council Members. You will be given access to these handbooks as part of your initial training, or ask your Volunteer Coordinator.
